Our Story

Westco Motors Cairns was formed as part of the Barry Group of Companies, an initiation of David and Jean Barry. With transportation pioneers as their forbearers, David and Jean set about making history of their own by creating what can only be described as one of Cairns’ most successful business enterprises.

Westco Motors Cairns is owned by David and Jean Barry and headed up by son-in-law Chris King as Dealer Principal. Originally established in 1983, it wasn’t until 1990 that it was taken over by the current owners the Barry family.  When the Barry’s first took on the company, Westco only dealt in Mazda, Nissan and BMW.  In 1995 Daewoo came on board. The Daewoo Company was purchased by GM and thus became GM Daewoo.

1998 saw the beginning of a new era for Westco Motors Cairns with the construction of the new BMW Showroom.  The dealership saw the inclusion of both Mini and BMW bikes in 2001. The re-vamping of the main building followed in suit and saw the dealership take on the European brand Renault.  The building of the new offices and showrooms was officially completed in January 2003.

GM Daewoo closed its doors in December 2004 and the dealership was able to pick up the Volkswagen franchise as a replacement.

Westco Motors Cairns is proud to employ over a hundred local employees today.

Thank you for taking the time to go back in time with Westco, we wish you well and hope to see you for many more years to come.
